No experience necessary! Beginners welcome!

April 12, 2026 - May 2, 2026

Buy a costume or make one from scratch?

There is no right answer on how to cosplay. Many first time cosplayers purchase their costumes first, and do simple alterations. Some are ready to start from scratch. No matter where your starting point is, this workshop will cover what you need to get your cosplay ready!

Your first (or next!) cosplay project starts here!

Four Week Workshop Overview

Week 1: Brainstorm, Plan Your Character & Intro to Materials and Tools

Transform your character into a actionable plan. Learn how to analyze reference art, break down a costume into buildable components, and choose the right materials (fabric, foam, etc.) for each part. Leave with a personalized “Cosplay Construction Guide” for your character.

Get hands-on with the core materials of cosplay. Explore fabrics, foam, and common tools. Learn tool safety for cutting, gluing, sewing and heat shaping. Begin working on your cosplay project!

Week 2: Fabric, Sewing, EVA Foam & Props

Become friends with the sewing machine and learn how to sew by hand! Learn threading, basic stitches, and straight seams. Learn other ways to bind fabric together besides sewing, such as using fabric glue, bias tape, etc.

Learn how to use foam and similar material for 3D structured cosplay pieces such as masks, armor, and props. You will learn patterning, cutting, heat shaping for curves, and gluing/bonding options.

Week 3: Assembly, Adhesion Painting, Weathering, and Decor

Learn how to make your cosplay wearable and durable. This week focuses on hidden structure: installing strong closures (velcro, straps, buckles), reinforcing stress points, and combining your foam and fabric components into a unified piece.

Elevate your build from a craft project to a con-ready masterpiece. Learn the professional techniques for a flawless finish: seamless priming, smooth painting, and advanced weathering to add depth, wear, and story to every piece.

Week 4: Wig Styling & Makeup + Finishing Touches

Learn how to complete the character transformation from the neck up. Get an intro to basic wig styling (cutting, shaping) and character appropriate makeup techniques. Plus, a clinic on adding those final details that make your cosplay pop.

Assemble your full costume for the first time! Make final adjustments, followed by a quick photoshoot. Learn con-ready tips for packing and repairs, and walk away with digital photos of your incredible creation and your new maker community.
